Q&A spotlight with Owner and Funeral Director, Jack A. Hawes

Could you share a bit about your personal journey and how you started this business?

“My journey in funeral service began after the death of my mom, Debra M. Hawes, who died Novenber 26, 2000. Six months later, I enrolled in mortuary school at Fayetteville Technical Community College and Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington, NC to pursue an Associate Degree in Mortuary Science. Thereafter, I pursued my education at Mount Olive College and obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management. I worked at Dunn Funeral Home, Burgaw for four years and for several years worked as a trade embalmer and driving fuel tankers at night. In May 2012, my wife, Terra Simmons Hawes, and I moved to Warsaw, NC to start a business known as Jack A. Hawes Funeral Home and Cremations doing business as Hawes Funeral Home.”

What services do you offer and how do you ensure each family receives personalized care?

“We offer a range of services from traditional funerals to alternative services, green services, memorials, and cremations. Most services today are customized by individual families. Allowing families to customize funerals helps them feel more involved in the arrangements. I tell employees to treat families and loved ones like their own. Each family receives personalized attention, regardless of how many services we have in a week.”

As you look to the future, do you have any plans or visions for how your funeral home might grow or evolve?

“Within the past few years, we have had a steady increase in the families we serve and have noticed that families are choosing to have services at the funeral home instead of a religious center. Because of this, we must consider building or moving to a larger facility as well as possibly having a second location. Funeral homes and churches in the South remain largely segregated. We predominantly serve African American families, but we are evolving and crosses those racial and ethnic barriers. My trainer taught me years ago that great service means more to families than impressive buildings or cars. We have been in Warsaw for 14 years serving families in Duplin, Pender, Wayne, Sampson, Bladen, New Hanover, and Brunswick Counties and are looking forward to serving for many more years to come.”
